Mapping Mediterranean Lands - an online exhibition
Mapping Mediterranean Lands is a project that aims to "identify, catalog, conserve, and make electronically accessible maps in American overseas research centers around the Mediterranean area." The project is part of Digital Library for International Research. The whole International Research Maps Database contains bibliographic records and images on approximately 5,000 maps. Mapping Mediterranean Lands represents a selection from this database online.
Of major interest for the study in Jewish history and culture is (among others) the map inventory of the W. F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Research in Jerusalem. "The collection includes modern maps of Palestine and Israel in all scales, especially the map of Palestina 1:20,000." A brief view of the inventory (last updated in 2004) is available online. A further highlight is the Map Exhibition. Here you will find (among others) a Map by Claude R. Conder (ca. 1881) showing a Portion of eastern Palestine (see map above). All maps are available in printable PDF-versions.
